What is Stuttering?
Stuttering is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects the natural flow of speech. It typically emerges between the ages of 2 and 5 - a time of rapid language development.
- The Facts: It is more common in boys than girls, and while the exact cause is unknown, there is a strong genetic link. You cannot "catch" stuttering from anyone else.
- Why Early Intervention Matters: Many children go through a temporary period of developmental dysfluency. However, because we cannot predict who will outgrow it naturally and who will need support, clinical evidence strongly recommends treating stuttering as soon as possible. Early intervention prevents children from "practising" the stutter, leading to better, faster outcomes.
