Play Ideas for Newborn Play and Development
A brand new baby just eats and sleeps right?... How do you play with them? Keep reading to find out what a paediatric speech pathologist and physiotherapist from our Perth therapy services clinic recommend!
Why Newborns Need Playtime
Yes, it’s true, your newborn will do a LOT of feeding and sleeping, but as the days and weeks roll on, their precious awake times will get longer, and there’s so much you can do during this ‘play’ time to support their development.
It doesn’t have to be hard work though, for either of you. Don’t overthink it, because we know there’s SO much else going on for both of you right now. Read on for some simple ideas from our Perth therapy services team at Walky Talky Hub to start today.
How Much Newborn Playtime is Enough?
Yes newborn babies tire quickly but they also have a big appetite for sensory stimulation. This DOES NOT mean you need black and white cards or battery operated toys! Sensory stimulation for a newborn can be something as simple as a walk around the garden, hearing your voice, experiencing some movement, feeling the breeze, and smelling the big wide world!
Read your baby’s cues and be aware when your baby has had enough so the play time is enjoyable for both of you. It might only be a few minutes to begin with. You are the expert on your baby and very soon you will begin to recognise their cues for sensory adventure, milk and sleep. Our therapy services in Perth often guide parents to follow these cues naturally.
Everyday Activities that Count as Newborn Play
Start by entertaining yourself! Being out in the world doing anything you need or want to do is a wonderful way to engage your baby. You don't need to be at home to do newborn play time. Experiences like coffee with friends, a walk in the pram or carrier or even grocery shopping offer a wealth of entertainment! Go about your day as you want to, and create little spaces for the activities below on the go. You don't need to be trapped at home!
Simple Newborn Play and Sensory Stimulation
Hold your baby close so they can see your face and use big facial expressions. Newborns are near-sighted, so anything further than 20-30cm is blurry for them. Their vision is perfect for gazing at your face though! Make faces, stick out your tongue, blow raspberries and SING! – your baby will love watching you and listening to you. Singing is also a great way to keep them entertained and calm. Our Perth therapy services regularly encourage parents to use these simple strategies at home.
Developmental Activities Through Newborn Play
Give your baby variety to help them learn. Try different carrying positions, slowly move them through transitions like rolling, try baby massage and position them in ways to support their independent exploration of hands, face, mouth and feet. Families attending our therapy services in Perth often see how these activities encourage early movement and development.
Talking as Part of Newborn Play
Your baby loves to hear your voice. Talk about the things happening to them and around them. Keep it simple, pause between your sentences to allow a chance for your baby to take their turn in the conversation. They will start making cooing sounds at about 6-8 weeks and they can definitely join in the conversation with these beautiful sounds!
Newborn Play with Tummy Time
Start tummy time from day 1 but make sure it’s comfortable and stress free for both you and bub. Check out our tummy time tips on Instagram, or look out for our No Tears Tummy Time e Guide for Parents guide for loads of tips and photos for how to do tummy time from the beginning.
Remember, keep it simple. These early days can be overwhelming and your baby definitely doesn't need a fancy playtime set up, give yourself space to learn about and delight in your tiny baby. If you’re in Perth, our clinic, Walky Talky Hub, offers supportive therapy services to guide you with tummy time and other early play activities.
