Understanding Patellofemoral Syndrome in Children

Patellofemoral Syndrome Fact Sheet
Patellofemoral syndrome is one of the most common causes of knee pain. Is usually felt at the front of the knee- near the kneecap. It can often be poorly localised in that it may be difficult to feel exactly where the pain is coming from.
Patellofemoral knee pain is usually worse with flexion and loading of the knee- for example running, squatting, prolonged sitting or going up/ down stairs. This may be felt on one or both knees.
It is believed that patellofemoral pain can be caused as a result of malalignment of the bones of the leg (tibia, patella and femur),caused by strength deficits, overuse or trauma. Or a combination of these factors.
Diagnosing Patellofemoral Syndrome: What to Expect
Your GP may order an X-ray but this condition is frequently diagnosed by clinical presentation. Usually conservative treatment is recommended in the first instance and if symptoms persist further imaging may be indicated.
Physiotherapy Support for Patellofemoral Syndrome Pain Relief
It is understood that strength, flexibility and alignment of the lower limbs can contribute to patello femoral pain. Addressing any deficits identified in these areas can be useful in calming the pain associated with this condition. Your Physiotherapist will advise on the most appropriate exercises to do at home with your child as well as discussing the most appropriate footwear for your child to be wearing.
Your Physiotherapist may also suggest in some instances to seek the opinion of a Podiatrist regarding orthotic insoles in supporting your child's arches.
Taping has also been found to be helpful in some cases and your physiotherapist can teach you to tape your child’s knee to support their ability to play sport with comfort.
